In a recent interview with Wired, Cook emphasized health innovation as Apple’s potentially most significant legacy. Bloomberg reports that Apple has revived a previously shelved project to integrate cameras into its wireless earbuds. The initiative has gained new momentum amid the rising prominence of artificial intelligence, with Apple positioning it as a priority project under its Apple Intelligence platform. While the technology might take several years to reach consumers, the development teams are working with renewed focus.
The concept of camera-equipped audio devices isn’t entirely new, and Apple faces competition in this emerging space. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is reportedly developing its own version called CameraBuds, which aims to incorporate generative AI features for language translation and object identification. Meta has already demonstrated similar capabilities with its Ray-Ban smart glasses, which recently received an update enabling Live AI functionality for real-time environmental interpretation.

A study from the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology demonstrated the effectiveness of their “heartphone” prototype, which integrated a photoplethysmography sensor into earbuds. The system achieved impressive accuracy with an error rate of just 0.63% during testing. Additional research from the MIT Media Lab explored the potential of measuring bilateral blood volume pulse through ordinary earbuds, enabling heart rate variability tracking.
Researchers have even discovered that ear-based photoplethysmography signals could serve as a unique biometric identifier, potentially adding security features to future AirPods. These signals, influenced by individual speaking patterns, could provide a new method of user authentication.
Apple’s track record in wearable health technology, exemplified by the Apple Watch’s success, suggests the company possesses the necessary expertise to successfully implement these features.
